Censorship : Do people self-regulate?

We have internalised the rhetoric that what we're doing is bad so we should not write this down.

Blogs can form communities due to interactivity. Blog Shopping Sprees!

But our actions might be governed because we see someone is watching us.

Communities are an extension for blogging. Blogging is used to info-tainment (paris hilton)

Perhaps why there is regulation in SIngapore is because we are a small young country that is "constantly under seige". Maybe after a hundred years Singapore would have mature then and then we can make our own informed choices but the government still does not believe we can.

They might want us to form a sense of nationhood first, so the government should help to establish this first (before our own perspectives are viewed?)

We can get around this by publishing on blogs that are not Singapore based?

Group C

- Offers space for expression. Opposed to newspapers?
Issues are subjective
Not so much filter.
Good representation of Singapore because we ourselves control what we put up.

But if you go too far on forums there will be moderators.

Satirical websites: People not from Singapore looking at it might think that SIngaporeans are "so poor thing" no freedom of expression. Or "singaporeans so creative! Can come up with this sorta thing."

While forums are a good medium to voice thoughts alot of people post rubbish, and threads degenerate to rubbish, and people don't want to read it anymore.

People might be hesitant to read because there are so many rants.

Group B

- How can we portray Singapore through youtube : help our music scene
In Malaysia they seem to push their local music more strongly. There are demo tapes.
In Singapore this fraternity is really small. Alot of the artistes lament the fact that they cannot gain an iron rice bowl out of their music. Youtube is easily accessible for music enthusiasts to play something they want to voice through their music, no need for cutting of CDs.
Because Singapore market is small, putting it to international audience through youtube would help. Broadcast yourself.

~~~
Singapore rebel guy got arrested. Police coming to your house to "get you", not just to take the video down.
Great brother is always watching. US websites are also regulated by their government (yes?)
I have a feeling the government is actually using youtube...US army is using it to recruit, and Uniquely Singapore ads are on youtube!
NUS/NTU students frequently use it to put up their own videos( self expression)
Group A
Podcasts
- gray areas when it comes to political podcasts
They should be online
People should decide whether it is offensive, and if majority think it is, then take it down.
Audience should decide which podcasts are morally/ethically wrong, and if so, take it down (in extreme cases like "rape")
Audience should decide through commenting system. Because we are a Democracy.
~~~

But people can view it faster before you can clamp down on the really subversive ones.

Those that are super morally and ethically wrong, government should step in and take them down.

Our opposition party is capable of spouting vulgarities, therefore if not regulated we might end up like Taiwan political party.

- Anyway, this is the original one posted by funtwo's fan guitar90 that caught the whole world's attention. Notice the staggering number of hits on it!

lonelygirl15

- This is basically a video clip of the news report that supposedly busted her
